Nous hésitons toujours à qualifier un modèle de chukka boot plutôt que desert-boot, tachant de réserver l’appellation à la véritable chukka-boot, celle de Peter O’Toole dans Lawrence d’Arabie, dont il convient de répéter que la version originelle est signée Crockett & Jones et montée en veau-velours non doublé. Pour autant, l’appellation ayant été galvaudée au fil des années, elle a fini par conquérir une certaine reconnaissance grand public qu’il devient difficile d’attribuer exclusivement aux modèles estivaux dépourvus de doublure. La hauteur du modèle nous incitera donc à parler de chukka-boot au sujet de ce modèle montant à trois œillets et quartier talonnette simulé (une autre caractéristique de la V.O.). Altan le monte sur la forme à bout rond effilé maison, qui a largement fait ses preuves depuis sa création en 2003.

Première particularité de la pièce : sa peau grenée, de toute beauté. La patine effectuée sur ce country calf de type crust rappelle sans effort qu’Altan Bottier est aujourd’hui indiscutablement l’un des meilleurs patineurs du marché parisien. Nous admirons ici une patine profonde entre rouge et noir, réalisée par l’une des « mains d’or » de la boutique de la rue Lincoln, dont la qualité saute aux yeux. Honnêtement, le résultat est magnifique.

La chukka Altan est comme il se doit montée en Goodyear, en l’occurrence sur une semelle gomme de type Dainite pourvue des « tétines » caractéristiques. Ainsi montée, la chaussure présente comme une double semelle, ce qui associé à la belle peau des Tanneries du Puy lui donne une allure mieux que casual chic : cossue.

Contrairement à la chukka Crockett, qui reste fidèle (et a bien raison de le faire !) à sa forme à monter originale un peu rustique, la création d’Altan présente une ligne plus effilée qui joue de façon subtile du contraste avec son positionnement de chaussure sport résistante, pour proposer à celui qui recherche une chaussure solide plus raffinée que la Crockett un modèle très convaincant. Attention cependant : que l’on ne s’y trompe pas, si cet exercice d’hybridation des styles a déjà donné lieu à quelques modèles aussi originaux qu’inspirés, c’est aussi un exercice périlleux sur lequel la moindre faute d’équilibre est sanctionnée par un résultat peu convaincant, quand ce n’est pas complètement raté (voir par ailleurs parmi ces Gros Plans). D’un autre côté, cette nouvelle démonstration rappelle aussi qu’Altan est l’un des rares chausseurs à avoir vraiment compris l’hybridation du style, position qui justifie son succès grandissant auprès des calcéophiles.

We still hesitate to describe a model of chukka boot rather than desert-boot, trying to reserve the name for the real chukka-boot, that of Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia, which we must repeat that the original version is signed Crockett & Jones and velvet calf unlined. However, the name has been overused over the years, it has finally conquered a certain public recognition that it becomes difficult to attribute exclusively to summer models lacking lining. The height of the model will therefore encourage us to talk about chukka-boot about this model with three eyelets and simulated back quarter (another characteristic of the V.O.). Altan rides it on the homemade tapered round last, which has been widely proven since its inception in 2003.

First feature of the piece: its grained calf, beautiful. The patina performed on this country calf type crust effortlessly reminds that Alban Bottier is indisputably today one of the best specialists on the Paris market. We admire here a deep patina between red and black, made by one of the “golden hands” of the Lincoln Street shop, whose quality is obvious. Honestly, the result is beautiful.

The Altan chukka is properly welted in Goodyear, in this case on a rubber sole Dainite type, provided with “teats” features. Thus mounted, the shoe presents as a double sole, which associated with the beautiful skin Tanneries du Puy gives it a look better than casual chic: opulent.

Unlike the Crockett chukka, which remains faithful (and rightly so!) To its original, somewhat rustic, last-fitting, Altan’s creation has a sharper line that plays subtly with its contrasting positioning. Resistant sports shoe, to offer to those who are looking for a solid shoe more refined than the Crockett a very convincing model. Be careful, though: make no mistake, if this hybrid style exercise has already given rise to some original and inspiring models, it is also a dangerous exercise on which the slightest lack of balance is sanctioned by an unconvincing result, when it is not completely missed (see also among these Close-ups). On the other hand, this new demonstration also reminds that Altan is one of the few footwear to have really understood the hybridization of style, a position that justifies its growing success among calleophiles.
